This is an essay I wrote in englsih. It's kind of boring but oh well. Read it if you want to. I know there's not just three reasons why teens commit suicide but we had to use only three reasons to support our thesis statement. Well here goes nothing. Leave a comment if you want
The causes of adolescent suicides are by mental illnesses, being on drugs and depression, which can all be prevented. Depression is said by the National Mental Health America, “It’s one of the most common mental illnesses effecting more than 19 million Americans each year. Biological, which is people with depression typically have too little or too much certain brain chemicals called “Neurotransmitters.”; changes in the brain that cause/contribute to the depression. (National Mental Health America 1) It is one of the causes of suicide and it’s symptoms make a great deal of leading to what might actually be suicide. “Crying a great deal, not seeing friends, can’t talk or explain feelings, becoming self destructive, talking about death or suicide, feeling guilty or helpless.”, are symptoms of it says Elizabeth Fenwick and Dr.Tony Smith. (Depression 242) Causes can be stress, low achieving, low self esteem, family breakup, or tragic events occurring, or just reasons you have no control over. All which lead to depression which then leads to suicide. The chances of attempts and successful suicides are from one out of many reasons can be depression. “It is fact that some 500,000 teenagers attempt suicide every year: 90% girls but 70% boys. One reason may be that most girls choose to overdose as their suicide attempt”, says Elizabeth Fenwick and Dr.Tony Smith. (Depression 242) Also another fact that should be known is that anxiety can turn into depression. Anxiety which is : “State of being uneasy, apprehensive about what may happen, or concerns about possible future events.”, says Michael Maloney and Dan Rachel Krazy. (Straight Talk about anxiety and Depression 24)
The second reason that causes adolescent suicides are mental illnesses. Schizophrenia for instance. “A chronic, severe and disabling brain illness. 2 Million Americans suffer from the illness in a given year. People with it have a higher rate of suicide that general population; 10 percent with it commit suicide.”, said by Kevin Caruso. (Schizophrenia 1) Also people with it often have hallucinations and/or delusions. They hear voices that no one else can hear, believe that other people are controlling their thoughts, and others are reading their minds or plotting to harm them. Just another reason why adolescents with this commit suicide. This too can be prevented with medication, therapy, and support from family and friends. Another mental illness that can cause adolescent suicides is Bipolar disorder. “People that experience extreme mood swings than others, which include manic episodes and depressive episodes. People may attempt suicide but like all the rest of the reasons may not go through with it but are still in a lot of risk and danger.
The last reason I have for adolescent cause of suicide is being on drugs. When people are on them they are no longer in control of their actions therefore making unsafe choices, putting their lives in harm and/or danger. It can make your painful feelings numb and can effect your judgment. “It Can greatly increase your risk of hurting or killing yourself impulsively even though you may not have fully decided that.”, says Kevin Caruso. (Drugs 1) The percentage is high and, “The percentage of alcoholics among suicide victims are higher than 5% and that 5% of call alcoholics die from suicide that is the cause of death for 1 to 2 percent of the total population.”, says Herbert Hendin (suicide and Drugs 147) People tend to withdraw themselves before starting on drugs and with the right help this can be prevented and stopped. That is why suicides are caused by mental illnesses, being on drugs, and depression.
